New College Durham (NCD) is\u00a0delighted\u00a0to announce it has been chosen as one of only four colleges across the country to have been recognised as an Advanced\u00a0Manufacturing Technical Excellence College (TEC).<\/p>\n
TECs will work with employers, representative bodies, trade unions, strategic authorities, and local government to provide people with better training and job opportunities, and to\u00a0generate\u00a0the highly trained workforce that local economies need.<\/p>\n
NCD is one of the few\u00a0Further\u00a0Education\u00a0(FE)\u00a0colleges that\u00a0have been\u00a0awarded\u00a0\u2018technical excellence status\u2019\u00a0by the\u00a0Department for\u00a0Education,\u00a0recognising its\u00a0deep specialisms in priority skills areas.\u00a0The college has earned its\u00a0status\u00a0due to its\u00a0continued\u00a0demonstration of excellence in provision of specific priority technical skills\u00a0in Advanced\u00a0Manufacturing.\u00a0Its\u00a0model of innovative teaching and curricula excellence\u00a0will\u00a0be used to\u00a0drive\u00a0greater coordination and collaboration across the\u00a0advanced\u00a0manufacturing\u00a0sector.<\/p>\n
Alison Maynard, Deputy Principal for Curriculum at New College Durham, said:<\/p>\n

This award reflects both the strength of our college and the North East\u2019s long-standing reputation as a centre of excellence in advanced manufacturing and engineering.<\/p>\n
Through our strong partnerships with employers across key sectors, we have built a provision that responds directly to industry needs, supporting both regional growth and nationally significant supply chains.\u201d<\/p>\n
NCD is already a recognised hub of excellence in the advanced manufacturing sector, with advanced facilities and resources, including expert staff,\u00a0innovative\u00a0course materials, and strong employer and industry partnerships.<\/p>\n
The college also proudly leads the\u00a0North East\u00a0Institute of Technology (NEIoT),\u00a0which\u00a0brings together employers, higher education institutions, and further education colleges across the region, working to deliver advanced technical education in areas including construction, engineering,\u00a0manufacturing\u00a0and digital.\u00a0The\u00a0new\u00a0Advanced Manufacturing\u00a0TEC will complement\u00a0the\u00a0existing\u00a0Institute of Technology, strengthening our collective efforts to drive the technical skills agenda across the\u00a0North East.<\/p>\n
Alison continued: \u201cThis investment will enable us to expand technical training, strengthen\u00a0our\u00a0industry-led curriculum development, and support clear progression pathways into advanced manufacturing careers.\u201d<\/p>\n
As part of a wider plan to\u00a0plug an estimated\u202fworker\u00a0shortfall\u202fin\u202fBritain’s\u00a0priority\u202findustries\u00a0by 2030, around\u202f65,000\u202flearners\u202fwill\u202fnow\u00a0have access\u00a0to\u202ftraining\u202ffor\u202fhigh-demand\u00a0jobs\u202fin\u202fthe\u00a0country\u2019s\u00a0fastest-growing\u202findustries\u00a0through\u00a0the\u00a0new TECs.\u202f\u202f\u00a0They\u00a0will\u00a0equip young people with the technical skills needed to access well-paid, high-skilled jobs.\u00a0It\u2019s\u202festimated\u00a0that\u202falmost\u202f600,000\u202fadditional\u202fworkers\u202fwill\u00a0be needed by\u00a02030\u202fin\u202fthese\u00a0key sectors, underlining the scale of demand for skills and further\u00a0training\u202fin\u202fthese\u00a0critical\u202findustries.<\/p>\n
