University of Sunderland – Innovation Discovery Clinic on Wednesday 24 June. This event is designed to demonstrate business growth and innovation opportunities through our funded Knowledge Transfer Partnerships programme.

Showcasing Digital Adoption, Product Development and Strategic Business Development, we’d like to show you what can be achieved through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with the University of Sunderland.

The event will be held at Hope Street Xchange from 9:30am – 12pm and will offer businesses an insight into bringing innovation into their organisation to help them grow, develop new products or services or to access new markets. Our Knowledge Transfer Partnerships project provides a Government-funded programme that has supported businesses for over 50 years, and we’d love to work with businesses that are considering opportunities for growth.

Starting at 9.30am for pastries, coffee and tea, we will be hearing from a number of experts on subjects such as:

  • AI, Data and Digital Twinning
  • New Product Development

Management KTPs (MKPT), which can be used to develop the business to ready it for growth through new systems, culture and practices.

To be eligible for the funded project, businesses are required to operate in, or support, Manufacturing, Cultural/Creative, Health and Life Science, Clean Energy or Digital/Technology.

KTPs are traditionally 18 months to 3 years in duration and are a three-way partnership between the business, a subject specialist and the University of Sunderland, which provides academic support, guidance and expertise to deliver successful change.

If your business is asking: “Where will our skills come from in the next 5 years?” …then you need to be in the room

North East manufacturers are feeling the pressure — skills shortages, retirements, and a shrinking talent pipeline.

On 10th July (8–10am) we’re bringing HR leaders, engineering managers, and SME decision‑makers together at The Workplace, Newton Aycliffe to do something about it.

This isn’t another talking shop. It’s the start of a practical, employer‑driven solution where your challenges feed directly into colleges and training providers. If your business is asking: “Where will our skills come from in the next 5 years?” …then you need to be in the room.

Breakfast • Networking • Real conversation • Real influence

The Technical Learning Company (TLC) is a new initiative designed to connect industry and education to shape tomorrow’s skills landscape.

This pilot will begin in the North East with the T-level in Engineering and Manufacturing – before potentially being scaled across other qualifications and sectors

The North East is now just 12–18 months away from a skills shock that could destabilise its entire UK manufacturing base.

National data shows 186,000 engineers are set to retire by the end of 2026 across the UK — roughly 20% of the UK’s skilled workforce disappearing in one hit.

For a region as manufacturing-intensive and ageing as the North East,….. this isn’t a warning.

It’s an oncoming and unavoidable void.

And in a war for talent this fierce, teachers having up‑to‑date, rapidly evolving technical information is now essential — because technology is accelerating faster than the education system can currently keep up

Please see short video that will explain further – https://vimeo.com/935515472

Event Details

Date: Wednesday 4 March

Venue: East Durham College
Breakfast: Served from 08:00
Close: Approximately 10:30

Why This Meeting Matters

The Royal Academy of Engineering has warned that the UK will not meet its national needs without a stronger, better‑prepared pipeline of engineers and technicians — and that this requires coordinated action between industry and education.

TLC is responding by creating a practical support package for teachers and delivery professionals, shaped directly by employers and education leaders, to ensure T Level delivery reflects real industry needs.

How TLC Plans to Support Teachers

  • Video‑based (streamed) learning resources, regularly updated to reflect the latest technologies used in industry today
  • Employer‑aligned project briefs that give students real, current experience and help teachers and colleges secure clearer, higher‑value placements with employers, adding measurable value for learners and industry
  • Teacher‑training and support platforms to build confidence, consistency, and industry relevance

What We Need From You

  • Identify the essential skills and behaviours students must develop before their placement, through collaboration between teachers, colleges, and employers
  • Shape project themes and placement expectations that reflect real workplace needs, ensuring students can add value to the company from day one
  • Advise how TLC’s resources can reduce pressure on teachers and improve employer engagement
  • Help define a local model (with local employers) that can be scaled nationally later this year

We welcome 2 keynote speakers to the meeting – Andy Gailey from his own business (Uptime Consulting) who focusses on improving manufacturing processes and Paul Hind, (ex-plant manager of 3M Newton Aycliffe) who is going to present some “lean “ principles that can be taught to help teachers “shape” the students to offer a “value add” to the employers

Please confirm your attendance using the email address shown below (or on the poster).

martin@technicallearningcompany.co.uk

We would be delighted to have your insight at this important session to shape the next steps
